season there would be a handful of guys that
came in my office complaining about not
getting enough playing time.
Oddly enough, these fellas that didn't feel like
they were being treated 'fairly' were never the
guys that were putting in the extra time in the
batting cage or in the weight room.
In fact, I remember the fall of 1997 we had 73
guys come in for the trying to make the team
(at that point we didn't have scholarships).
About 3 weeks into fall practice I started to hear
some grumbling from a few guys saying they
weren't getting enough opportunities to showcase
their talents.
Like yesterday I recall standing in front of the group
and saying:
"I've heard that some of you are unhappy with the
Number of at bats you're getting or the number of
innings you're getting to pitch.
Here is where I tell you I don't give a sh&t.
If you want opportunities - you create them.
If you want more at bats - make the most of
the ones you are getting.
If you want more innings - pitch better during
the opportunities that you are getting.
Strangely, I don't ever see any of the people that
are complaining staying after practice doing extra
work.
Bottom line...it's not the number of opportunities
you're getting.
It's what you do with them."
I've not coached a game of baseball in a long, long
time (if you ignore Tyler's T-Ball games) - but I still
feel the same way today.
Don't complain about the opportunities that aren't
coming your way...make the most of the ones you
are getting and put in the time and effort necessary
to create the new ones that you want.
Dedicated to your success,
Pat
