What are you doing?

Today we're holding a pre-Fast Track workshop
for Bootcamp Blueprint members beginning in
about an hour.

We're going to be covering:

:: Lead Generation

:: Public Speaking

:: Sales

:: Retention and EFT Billing

We're also going to be doing a bunch
of role plays and hot seats to get everyone
involved.

If you're not able to be here for this or
for Fast Track, I'd suggest that you at least
take a couple of hours to *work on* your business
over the next couple of days too.

Pick the key areas you need to work on and
study up. For most bootcamp owners, those
are areas that need attention - so we chose
them.

Choose 2-3 areas that you could improve on and
take some time to make it happen - just like
the people here are.

Remember - you're either getting better or you're
getting worse. The people here are getting better
for sure.

You should make sure you're doing the same.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

Who’s Your Who?

I'm off to New Jersey for Fast Track later today
but I wanted to drop you a quick note before I
leave.

My talk will be on uncovering the hidden opportunities
in your business - and trust me, there are plenty of
them.

But in my opinion, the biggest hidden opportunities
you have are all hidden in your 'who.'

See, I believe that your network - in other words, your
'who' - holds the keys to any door you want to open.

For me, looking back, most every move I've made
came from someone in my 'who.'

I got to become an Asst College Baseball Coach when I
was 21 because the head coach happened to be my
former high school coach.

I got the head coaching job 2 years later because
I had built relationships at the University.

Coaching relationships allowed me to:

:: Be an Asst General Manager for a minor league
baseball team

:: Play one year of professional baseball

::Work with baseball at the 1996 Olympics

::Take a job as a baseball academy director once

I left coaching at the college level.

Relationships I made their opened doors for me
to move into personal training. It was there that
I met Nick and eventually we became business
partners.

Every business relationship I currently have
started with people simply being part of my who...

:: Brian Grasso

:: Jim Labadie

:: AJ Roberts

You name it - they started out as members of my
network.

So if you're looking for

:: A new location for your facility

:: An opportunity to do public speaking

:: A corporate fitness contract

If you're looking for anything - I'd bet your 'who'
already holds the keys.

You just need to ask for them...

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - We'll be revealing 5 things at Fast
Track that I can't wait to share...

How Do You Feel About This?

For the first couple of years I was coaching baseball
I really didn't give a lot of thought to mo.ney.

I loved what I was doing and I figured that if I did a
good job the mon.ey stuff would take care of itself.

Funny though, before long we were nationally ranked
and by most measures I was a successful coach...but
I was bringing home 18K a year.

In fact many of the young guys that I thought would
go on to be great head coaches got out of coaching
because they were tired of deferring their student
loans and not being able to buy a house.

In the fitness industry I see the same thing...a lot
of people barely getting by, and I wonder how
much longer they'll hold out until they decide to
move on so they can pay the bills.

What I've found out though is that you don't have
to choose between doing what you love or earning
a nice living - but it all begins with something Jim
discusses here:

http://tinyurl.com/qsf35n

Let me know what you think.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - Thanks for all the B-Day wishes over the weekend. We
caught a Reds game, Carlo Alvarez's Clinic and the Indy 500,
so I didn't get to get back to everyone. So thank you!!!!

You Get A Second Chance

Back in February we held the IYCA International
Summit here in Louisville. It was one of the coolest
things I've ever been fortunate to be a part of.

But I'm biased, so take a look at what a couple of other
Fitness pros had to say:

"Incredible event. The energy, the enthusiasm, the
presentations were all top notch. Best event I've been
to in 10+ years. Classy organization. I even cried a
few times! Several more of our staff will be there
next year."

- Brian Calkins

"Awesome, awesome, awesome!! Let me know when
registration is ready for 2010. I hope to be the first
to sign up, first one at the event, and last one
to leave."

- Carmen Sturniolo

If you weren't there - you now have a second chance
to reap the benefits of the IYCA Summit.

We've just released the DVD set and as an added
bonus, we're throwing in the entire "How To Run
Profitable Speed Clinics and Camps" workshop
from that Sunday which will be selling separately
for $147 after Tuesday.

You can get the entire event and the Speed Clinic &
Camp Workshop for only $197 - but you've got to
act before Tues. Then the Summit Set goes to $297
and the Speed Workshop goes to $147.

Here's a list of some of the presenters you'll
be learning from:

* Lee Taft - The World's Best Speed Coach.

* Carlo Alvarez - For Cincinnati Reds Strength
& Conditioning Coach and currently regarded as
the top High School Strength Coach in the U.S.

* Dr. Kwame Brown - One of the World's Leading
Experts in Youth Fitness.

* Me;)

* Nick Berry - Co-Owner of the IYCA and Renown
Business Systems Guru.

* Dave Jack - Nationally Recognized Youth Coach
and Men's Health Expert

* Kim McCullough - International Hockey Expert
and Successful Author

* Dr. Chris Mohr - One of the Premier Nutrition
Experts in the World.

Oh - and the Sunday Speed Clinic & Camp session
is Brian Grasso at his best.

If you're interested, check it out here:

http://www.iyca.org/2009summitdvds

But don't wait long - this $197 offer only goes
until Tuesday!

Have a great weekend!

Next weekend and the APPT

Hey aff - By now you've probably checked
out a couple of our posts about the APPT.

At least I hope so;)

Well - Nick has an interesting perspective to

at Fast Track. Check it out here:

P.S. - I just wanted to wish Nick's Alma Mater
Campbellsville University good luck in their

Series.

Nick was a star baseball player and asst
coach there a few years back but they never
made it to the Series while he was there so
he's currently in Idaho cheering them on.

5 Quick Tips For More Clients

Here are 5 quick tips you can use that will result
in more clients and a better business:

1.Prospects are attracted to people they perceive
as experts. So do the studying and legwork to
become an expert - then put it on display. Write
and speak - there is no better way to gain expert
status once you've done the legwork.

2. People do business with people they like, so be
likeable. Manners and courtesy never go out of
style.

3. People want to be around others who listen. Let
others be the star of the show and they'll flock
to you. Spend 70-80% of your time listening and
20-30% talking and prospects will love you.

4. People want to be around successful people, so
make sure your camps are full and your schedule
is booked. If you don't have enough paying clients,
trade out fr.e.e training for referrals.

5. People will seek you out if you make their life easier
and save them time. Short, fun & efficient workouts
and programs that fit their hectic schedule will make
you *very* popular with clients.

5 quick tips - now put them into action and reap
the rewards.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - Hopefully I'll be seeing you this coming weekend
at Carlo Alvarez's seminar or next weekend at Fast Track.
For Fast Track all of the rooms we blocked off are gone,
but there are still a couple of seats if you hurry.

Do You Need A Makeover?

As I mentioned on the blog yesterday, Jim & I
went to Tim Schmidt's Tribal Marketing workshop
this past weekend.

This was a big ticket (5K) event that really delivered
as Tim provided the most thorough and detailed
information at any event I've ever attended.

But the thing that really struck me about Tim - aside
from his attention to detail - was how he persevered.

Tim did what we're often told to do - he followed
his passion and built a business. In fact, he built a
business centered around his passion that was losing
15K per month.

Ouch.

So what did Tim do? He took that same topic and that
same passion and completely remade his business.

The result is staggering. He went from a business that
was losing 15K per month to one that is doing several
million per year in about 36 months.

All while targeting the same niche market.

So if you've ever thought that your business
might have some unrealized potential, take a
page out of Tim's book and give it a makeover.

Look for ways to better attract and serve your
'Tribe'. Look for ways to provide them a better
experience, more effectively fill their needs and
give them what they want.

Do that and you might just experience the same
type of turnaround that Tim did.

Who Needs Continuing Ed?

I'm in Chicago today to with Jim and attending

a seminar on relationship marketing.

Along the way I stopped in Indianapolis to meet

with Mike Robertson to do a brief consult about he

and Bill Hartman's facility.

I met with them back before they opened - about

a year ago. After a year they have an incredibly

successful facility - but they want to take it to the

next level so we met and discussed how they're

going to make that happen.

Funny - I get a lot more inquiries about coaching and

consulting from trainers & coaches who are undoubtedly

among the top 1% in the industry than from those who

are less successful.

Wonder why that is???

Dedicated to your success,

Pat

P.S. - Funny, it's the same way in other

industries too. The people at this high end

event are mostly already successful too. But

we're all here to step our game up. What are

you doing to step up yours?

One More Lesson From Perform Better

I was reminded once again of the power of being
in front of crowds this past weekend.

I don't think I saw one speaker sell something from
the stage - but I guarantee that this weekend's
presentations will lead to hundreds of thousands
in sales over the course of the year for Perform Better.

How? Because the speakers are the experts and they
we're using balls and bands and the TRX. They
integrated the tools into their presentation when they
were relevant.

And the people in the crowd want to be like the
speakers.

I'm not saying you should ask for a sale at your
presentations - in fact I think you should make some
offer. Instead - what I'm telling you is that if you're
not getting in front of groups, you need to change
that immediately.

If you're doing it once a month - do it more often.

Nothing is more powerful than being positioned as
an expert and nothing positions you ask an expert
faster and more effectively than public speaking.

Dedicated to your success -

3 Tips From Perform Better

Nick and I went to this past weekend's Perform
Better in Providence and I've got to tell
you - it was awesome!

I could've just as easily titled this '30 Tips
From Perform Better' as there was that much and
more to take away from the event.

But I've extracted 3 of my top takeaways to share
with you:

1. There is no substitute for being a great trainer or
coach. There is no amount of SEO stuff or copywriting
that can make up for being average (or worse) at your
craft.

Being great at what you do makes everything
else easier. Marketing gets easier, selling gets
easier, retention gets easier and getting referrals
gets easier.

However - there is no amount of marketing that will
overcome a poor service long term. It might work in
the short term - but over the long haul it's a formula
for failure.

2. You have to have passion and energy. All the
*great ones* have both passion and energy. I'm not
saying you need to be like Billy Mays on his
infomercials, but I watched so many great trainers
and coaches talk both in and out of their
presentations and their passion for what they do
couldn't have been more visible.

And on top of that - their energy levels raised
the energy levels of whoever they were talking
to.

They were always 'on' and you need to be 'on'
whenever you're around clients or prospects too.

3. There are no more excuses. With training /coaching
events like Perform Better, business events like Fast
Track and market specific events like the IYCA
Summit - along with opportunities to spend time at
facilities like Mike Boyle's or Alwyn Cosgrove's -
there is no excuse for someone to be unsuccessful.

Not only is the education out there - it's
readily accessible.

Nick and I will be heading to Perform Better in
Chicago and Long Beach too. Hopefully we'll see
you there!

Dedicated to your success,

Pat

Time is Your Most Valuable Asset

If you spend every cent you have you can go train
someone and earn more mon.ey.

In this sense the amount of money we can have
access to is infinite.

Unfortunately, we all have a finite amount of
time on this earth. If we waste a minute, we
have lost it forever.

While this may seem intuitively obvious, amongst
the fitness professionals I meet, this one simple
principle is the most important yet underappreciated
principle of business.

Let me describe one conversation that I had with
someone inquiring about business coaching that
is representative of conversations I have had time
and time again with different fitness professionals.

We will call the fitness pro Jeff.

Pat: Tell me how your business is performing relative
to your goals.

Jeff: Well we are doing OK but I know we can do better.

Pat: If you know what to do, what is keeping you
from doing it?

Jeff: I always get interrupted and I can never
find the time to work on new projects or grow
my business.

Pat: Is your business profitable?

Jeff: Yes it is. But I know I could easily do better.

Pat: How much would you like to make in the next
twelve months?

Jeff: After all expenses $150,000.

Pat: Do you believe that this is a realistic objective?

Jeff: Absolutely.

Pat: How many hours a week would you like to work?

Jeff: 50 hours per week and I would like to take 5 weeks vacation (including holidays).

Pat: So Jeff, that means you would like your business
to earn about $64 for every hour that you work.
($150,000/(50 hours x 47 weeks)).

After an examination of Jeff's workweek, it was
obvious that he was involved in a number of
activities that were not worth $64 per hour.

If Jeff spends 35% of his time working on tasks
that could be handled by a $15/hour employee he
is either going to have to work a lot more hours
than he wants to, or he is going to have to get
his business earning more like $90 per hour for
the balance of the time he works.

Now, I am quick to advise fitness pros to be
careful with how they spend mon.ey. But Jeff's
penny pinching was not in his best interest.

Jeff was trying to save paying an assistant
(about $12,000 per year). But, by trying to save
mon.ey it was costing him considerably more.

He was not having fun and he could have been
implementing changes that would yield him more
like $50,000 in additional profit (4 times what
he thought he was saving).

As a fitness professional, the most important
decision you make is what you spend your
time doing.

Fitness pros that I meet who work too many hours
and do not make as much as they want, often treat
their time very causally. Typically, they do not
plan their day and tend to be reactive.

Often they do not even keep a schedule outside
of their sessions.

Rarely can they tell you how they actually spent their non-training time.

Conversely, successful people plan and track
their days and their week as carefully as they
spend their mon.ey.

Think about what will give you the best long
term ROI for your time. Do not be distracted by
saving a few short-term dol.lars if you have an
opportunity to create something that will generate
returns for you year after year.

Dedicated to your success,

Pat

Think BIG, Start Small

"Anything worth doing is worth doing well."

That's how the phrase goes, right?

My take on it is a little different, here goes:

"Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly."

Huh?

Rarely is someone great at something the first time
they try it.

But, the ones who become great are willing to start
where they are and invest the sweat equity necessary
to do it well.

So if you're going to dream big dreams, be willing
to put your ego aside and start small.

If you want to be a great public speaker, go speak
to a small social group for free.

If you want to write articles for magazines or have
a book in Barnes & Noble, start writing and submit
articles to e-zines or print off a few copies of your
book at Lulu or another print on demand publisher
and pass them out to anyone who will read them.

If you want to start training athletes - train some for
fr.ee until you've proven that you can get results.

Do the things that are within your power to do - and
do them NOW.

Don't sit around and wait for your big break - it's
not going to find you.

You have to find it.

Dedicated to your success,

Pat
