A Lesson From Yesterday’s Meeting

As I mentioned in yesterday's email, Mastermind
Member Bob McEnaney came to Louisville for a
private meeting to work on his business.

We dissected Bob's business and talked about
various opportunities that were available to him,
how to optimize the 3 different business components
that he has and developed a step-by-step plan for
Bob to follow to take his business to the next level.

While most of what we covered in the meeting is
confidential - there is one big takeaway from my
meeting with Bob that I'd like to share because I know
it will be of benefit to you.

That one thing is focus.

Bob has 3 different business components:

1. Offline to consumers
2. Online to consumers
3. Business to business

To be able to make progress in each of these areas, Bob
has to be able to ignore all the distractions, all the new
fads and gimmicks - anything that takes his eyes away from
the prize.

It's too easy for Bob, me or anyone else to get distracted with
the next great idea, next cool marketing trick or next guru's
magic formula.

Don't do it.

As I've often said – 'you get paid for done.'

Keep the blinders on and see things through.

Bob's going to have 3 big streams of income from taking
that approach.

You should do the same.

Dedicated to your success,

Pat

P.S. – If your focus is training athletes then you need to be
on this webinar Monday night with me:

Lee Taft is going to share his system for developing
faster athletes – every time.

It is a must attend if you coach athletes or plan to in the
future. Hope to see you there!

What should you invest in?

Today our Elite Mastermind member Bob McEnaney is
in from Minnesota to for a day of coaching to work on
his business.

We're going to spend the better part of the day working
Bob's core business which is in the Cycling niche.

We're going to work on his…

:: Offline training business
:: Online business
:: Untapped opportunities

And we're going to identify the ways that Bob can
leverage all of his talents, knowledge and assets to
the maximum.

Why do I mention this to you? Because you should
be consistently dedicating time to working ON your
business, just like Bob.

Otherwise you get stuck in the day to day of what
you do and miss out on much of what you're capable
of accomplishing.

So start investing more in yourself.

Invest more of your time in getting better…not just
getting done.

Invest in your education.

Invest in reaching your potential.

I guarantee that there is no stock, bond or fund that will
give you half as good a return.

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

P.S. - If you think you'd like to make a trip to Louisville
to spend a day giving your business a makeover and
uncovering the untapped opportunities you're missing -
drop me an email. I don't have many openings in my
schedule, but I can probably squeeze in 2-3 trainers
in the next couple of months.

Better or Different

Back in my coaching days I read a book that helped
shape the direction I'd take our program.

My first two years as a head coach we were kinda good,
but we had yet to climb to the level of being a
nationally recognized program.

Then I read this book…I can't remember the title but
it was by a prominent college football coach and what
he said hit home.

To be successful you need to either be better or different.

Read that again – you either need to be better or different.

So I took a hard look at every aspect of our program and
decided if we could be better than the competition.

If we couldn't be better than them in that area, then I had
to find a way to be different.

That was the turning point. The next season and every season
thereafter we were a team to be reckoned with.
So think about how this applies to your business.

You can first strive to be better in every aspect of what
you do…

…but I don't know that you can position yourself as being
better than your competition in the eyes of clients and
prospects in everything…

So in those areas that you're having trouble separating
yourself – be different.

Find ways to stand out from the crowd.

Bottom line – don't every let people think you're just
like the competition.

Be better or be different.

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

P.S. – You want talk about being different? Instead of
only running a training business or a bootcamp like most
trainers, B.J. Gaddour also launched Workout Muse.

Now Workout Muse has their own I-Phone app and
there is a sweet deal for you here if you have an I-Phone:

Are Your Ships Coming In?

Recently I read an issue of a Dan Kennedy newsletter
where he likened his marketing efforts to sending ships
out to bring home their 'bounty.'

I like it.

He talked about the 'ships' he sends out like books,
sales letters, interviews and a variety of other things…

…all designed to bring back customers and profits.

So what are your ships & are you sending them out
every day?

Here are some 'ship' you should be 'sending out'…

:: Speaking engagements
:: Press releases
:: Trial gift cards
:: Referral requests
:: Cards to clients
:: Phone calls to prospects and clients
:: Emails
:: PPC ads, Facebook ads, Craigslist Ads

If you're not sending these 'ships' out each day,
you're failing to maximize your business growth
opportunities.

So make sure you send out your ships *every
day* this week!

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

P.S. – Over the weekend I wrote a post for http://www.PatNickandJim.com containing 37 of my best
success tips that will be posted this week. I think
you're really gonna like it…Here's #32…

32. We're not judged on what we could have been – rather
we're judged by what we actually become.

I'll keep you posted on when it goes live.

What Would You Do?

We got an email from our Mastermind Member Tyler
English today and he told us that he'd implemented
something he'd picked up at Bootcamp Bootcamp.

It's already added $8,000 to his revenue.

I'll be following up with Tyler and doing a blog post
on exactly what he did so you can model his success,
but for now I want to focus on something else.

There were probably a couple dozen things Tyler or
any of the other people in attendance could have gone
home, implemented and generated several thousands
dol.lars.

He chose one and took action.

I'm pretty sure that even if you've only read my emails
and blog posts – you have enough knowledge to add
25K, 50K…even 75K to your bottom line over the next
year…if you act on it.

A lack of ideas or knowledge – that's not what typically
holds people back.

It's a lack of action.

So pick something – a marketing strategy, a new approach
to sales, a new program to offer – and take action on it.

That one thing will do more for your business success
than anything else you can do.

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

The E-Factor

Having a successful personal training business is
founded on getting your clients great results.

But if you want your business to be extraordinary,
you have to provide more than results.

You have to have the Experience Factor.

You have to make your training business more
than just a place that proves workouts…

It has to be somewhere that people leave talking
about.

How do you do that?

You first need to decide what you want your business
to stand for…let me give you an example:

With Athletic Revolution & the IYCA, we want each
person's experience to be Unique, Exciting & Memorable.

That begins with how people are greeted and how
customer service requests are handled…but it's so much
more than that.

It's personal calls from the owners of the organization and
working to make people feel special and important
with each interaction we have with them.

It's a culture we're trying to infuse throughout those
organizations each and every day.

So what do you want your client's experience to be?
will they be greeted by name and made to feel like they're
the most important person around?

Will you create a high energy atmosphere with music,
motivation and an environment that people can't wait
to be part of?

Will you make sure that each client knows how important
they are to you with personal cards, calls and the occasional
chat?

Most businesses are only interested selling 'stuff.' Those
businesses are quickly forgotten and easily ignored.

Focus on the E-Factor and wow everyone you do business
with. Visiting your business will be a high point of their day
and they won't be able to stop talking about you.

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

P.S. – Workout Muse just launched 30-30 Mayhem…and if
you want something that will instantly add energy to your
training sessions – this is it. But don't take my word for it,

OPC - Part 2

As a business owner you should always be thinking
about establishing joint ventures, even if its just
a lead generation joint venture.

We've placed lead boxes and Take One Cards out with
local businesses offering fr.ee training or memberships.

The sign up form is used as a drawing entry to win a
fr.ee training program or membership. And for hosting the
box we give the business owner or manager a fr.ee membership

We've done Endorsed mailings, seminars, endorsed emails,
you name it.

So here's where you should start:

Step 1 - Understand What's in it for them.

You'll need these to demonstrate how much they might make
or how they could benefit from working with you.

If you know what your closing rate is for a typical lead
you can give them an estimate of the referral fees you
could pay out based on their number of prospects.

Step 2 - Make a list of potential complimentary or
related products and services.

Don't leave out products or services that aren't necessarily
related in which your clients might still be interested.

Step 3 - Make a list of the businesses that sell those
products and services.

Specifically note those companies in which you know
the owner or have contacts. Then send a letter to those
people and propose a meeting to explain your strategy
further.

Always start by introducing yourself and sharing
what's in it for them.

Make a follow-up phone call to set up the appointment.

Step 4 - Present a compelling case for a joint venture.

You might even mention that you have a call in to one
(or two) of their competitors to present the potential
venture to them as well.

Step 5 - Deliver on what you promise with integrity
and enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, as business owners we often look at
other businesses as competitors.

Potential JV's are all around you waiting for you to
take advantage of them if you're willing to think
differently.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - In my buddy Carlo Alvarez's spare time he's used
Greg Justice's Corporate Bootcamp System to land 2
corporate deals where he's going to run camps for over
300 employees.

Could you use 300 more bootcampers?

Are You Using OPC?

Too many personal trainers make the mistake of not
looking beyond their own list and traditional
marketing to see the opportunities that joint
ventures present.

Big mistake.

If that's you - You're missing out on marketing
to Other People's Customers - and you're leaving
a lot of mon.ey on the table.

Think about all the other businesses that probably
serve your target market...

- Shoe stores

- Athletic apparel stores

- Fitness Equipment stores

- Health food and nutrition stores

- Dry cleaners

- Hair salons

- Day Spas

- Tanning Salons

- Bridal Shops

- Restaurants

That's just the tip of the iceberg...

All these businesses market to more or less the same
customers. Do you think what you offer would be of
benefit to their customers?

I'd hope so.

Joint venture marketing is about creating a special
offer and getting the business with the related
product or service to present the offer to their
customers in a way that is a win-win for both of you.

Here's an example of how it might work:

You might consider allowing a local salon to give
away gift certificates for a fr.ee month of your
bootcamp as a premium. This way the salon benefits
by offering their customers a valuable fre.ebie
and you benefits by gaining exposure to new prospects.

So start brainstorming who you can approach and work
with...I'll be back tomorrow with tips on how to get
other businesses to work with you.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - Greg Justice still has a few spots available
in his next session of his Corporate Bootcamp
Course...the same one that helped Donovan Owens
land a 60K Corporate deal. Probably worth you
checking out...

I think you’ll like this

I heard from a lot of fitness pros yesterday in
response to the newsletter / blog post.

Over 100 emails and a number of blog comments.

Seems many people want more info on the program
suggestion I had;)

Well, what do they say – ask and you shall receive…

I mapped out everything you need to do to add this
program to your business.

I'm sure some people will think I'm foolish for giving
you the entire outline for a program I could have
created a product around…but whatever.

I'm happy to give you this blueprint under one condition…
…you use it;)

Another Catchy Headline?

So yesterday I made a blog post about offering
downsells to people who are former clients or
those you didn't convert.

Well, someone didn't seem to like what I had to say.

Here was their feedback:

******************************************
Common Sense 101 here.

Every e-mail you send makes me want to puke. They
have catchy headlines that lead to basic information,
and of course offers to pay you mo.ney.

You continue to be the face of everything wrong
with the training industry. You are about mo.ney,
and nothing else.

*******************************************

Hmmm…they didn't leave their name (shocker) so
it's kind like the internet version of a crank call.

Have you read the post – and do you agree?

Is it common sense?

Should I be sharing way more advanced stuff?

Do I make you puke;)

Take a look at the post if you haven't already and
let me know.

http://www.PatNickandJim.com

Bedros Keuilian went though something similar
over at his blog the other day and it generated a
ton of responses.

Honestly – I'm not looking for that. I just wanted
to share so I can make sure I'm doing my job - and
trust me - I know what comes with the territory.

But if you do have an opinion – let me know.
You can comment or shoot me an email.
But before I go – I guess I should ask…

…if someone makes you puke – do you read
their every email?

I didn't think so – that's just common sense;)

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. – In case you were wondering – there was
no offer or sales link yesterday. I was confused too
when he / she said that.

P.P.S. – If you would like me to go into specifics
about how I'd sell and deliver the program I
mentioned in the blog post – let me know.

Get Better and Better

On Friday at Bootcamp Bootcamp I looked over
and my stepson Tyler was trying to walk on his
hands.

Something he saw the mascot at a local baseball
game do.

A couple of minutes later he came over to me and
I told him it looked like he was having fun.

Tyler said: "Yeah, I'm not very good at walking on
my hands yet. But you know – if you practice you'll
get better and better."

Hopefully you think the same way.

If you're not good at public speaking, don't let that
stop you.

Practice it.

If you're not good at selling – same thing.

Practice.

A lot of people sell themselves short and give up
on things when they don't succeed the first time.

Don't be one of those people.

Some people think that anything worth doing is
worth doing well – and that may be true…

…But my opinion is that anything worth doing
is worth doing poorly until you learn to do it well.

So do me a favor and take Tyler's advice…practice
what you don't do well.

You'll get better and better.

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

P.S. – I often get asked what blogs I read, and
As far as fitness industry stuff goes, here are my

Honestly, I have about 6 or 7 more on my Google

2 Things For More Clients

I'll admit it – I'm exhausted;)

We had 2 days of Mastermind Meetings on Wednesday
and Thursday. Bootcamp Bootcamp was Friday and
Saturday. Then we had a few top trainers in for a One
Day Coaching Group on Sunday.

That makes for a pretty busy few days…but it was a
great 5 days.

We shared tons of great marketing, sales, retention and
referral strategies.

We had incredible presentations on how to deliver better
results using tools like bands, kettlebells, TRX and Workout
Muse.

Honestly, it would be almost impossible for someone to
have attended and not know *exactly* what they need to
do to build a 6 Figure Bootcamp.

If you weren't able to come, I'm sorry because you missed
an awesome event…but I want you to have a great business
too – so I want to give you what may be the most important
takeaway from the weekend.

Here it is.

Pick 2 things and be great at them.

If it's marketing – you don't have to be extraordinary at:

:: Public speaking
:: Writing
:: Direct Mail
:: Networking
:: Transformation contests
:: Online marketing

And all the other things you can do to generate leads.

Pick two and be great at them.

Work them every day.

The most successful Bootcamp owners we work with…

…People with 150, 200, 250 or more campers...

…They don't dabble in 15 different lead generation
strategies.

They're experts at a couple.

So think about the things you do to generate business
now.

Pick the 2 things you're good at and enjoy doing.

No work them like crazy.

Do that for the next 90 days and you'll see your
business explode – guaranteed.

Dedicated to your success –

Pat

P.S. - Will you do me a favor? I'd like to know
what topics you'd like to see covered over at

Drop me a note and let me know.

Thanks!

I Need You!

No – I'm not Uncle Sam.

But I still need you.

I need you to stop settling for less than you deserve.

I need you to have the impact in your community that
you're capable of having.

I need you to keep working to be the best that you can
become.

I need this because we all need this.

Our society needs great professionals just like you to
reach more people and have a greater impact.

Our profession needs more people like you to stay
longer and have more success. We need more
career fitness professionals and less people holding
down a job as a trainer.

Our future needs you to stop settling for good enough
and go for great. You and your family's future needs it.

Aspiring fitness professionals need it. They need you as a
role model.

I spent all day yesterday with our Mastermind Group –
some of the most successful professionals in the world.

They're the epitome of what I just talked about.

The industry needs more people like them.

I know you *can* do it. The question is *will* you do it?

Big Week Ahead

I'm off to pick up Mastermind Member Kim
McCullough at the airport for a half day of
coaching with her.

When Kim joined the Mastermind Group we
plotted out an event she could run the would
be the first of it's kind in the history of female
hockey.

She held this event – The Total Female Hockey
Experience – is August and absolutely killed it!

But that's what high achievers do.

They make things happen.

We have one of our two live Mastermind Groups
here Wednesday and Thursday.

They are all the same way. They make things happen.

Friday and Saturday we'll be holding the first ever
Bootcamp Bootcamp.
I'm going to bet the people attending that are the
same way.

That's why they're coming all the way to Louisville.

The formula is pretty simple:

Step one: Put yourself in a position to think big and
generate new ideas.

Study those who have been successful. Attend events.
Join Mastermind or Coaching groups.

Step Two: Take the ideas, strategies and tactics that you
come up with or learn – and work like crazy to make
them happen.

That's it.

Do that and you're already ahead of 98% of the
competition.

If you want to accomplish step one of that formula,
here's a great start.

Our team member A.J. Roberts has put together an
All-Star lineup of fitness business experts and he's
giving away a series of interviews he's done with
them.

At no charge;)

You can grab it right here:

http://www.fitnessprofitworkshop.com/

You're guaranteed to get tons of ideas, strategies
and tactics.

Then you just have to put them into action.

5 Reasons People Achieve Success

Why are some people more successful than others?

I think there are 5 traits that play into to:

1. Intelligence - Some people are just smarter than
others. Not really 'book smart', rather more 'street
smart' with things that can be applied in the real world.

2. Aptitude – everyone is good at certain things – some
people just aren't good at stuff that pays well or they
don't know how to monetize what they're good at.

3. Knowledge – Being smart isn't enough. Successful
people keep learning – and the more you learn, the
more you earn.

4. Attitude – Successful people have a positive, action
oriented attitude. They never see failure as an option.

They set out to achieve their goals – and they make it
happen.

5. Effort - Successful people work both smarter and
harder than everyone else. They take massive action
over and over. They're relentless.

I know you have these traits – that's why you're
reading this email.

You're different than most.

So quit settling and start making your goals
a reality.

Have a Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Pat

P.S. – Labadie is having a big Labor Day
Sale – I'm not getting any commission for
saying this, but if you don't have his Sales
Kit – you need to get it now while it's 50%
off. It works – really, really well.

it's a Holiday;)

Zach Even-Esh - Part 2

How can other trainers use your Underground
System to grow their business?

ZE: Using sandbags, bodyweight, kettlebells and
training outdoors is seriously liberating!

The days of circuits on machines and lame workouts
are gone. People want excitement and they want to
feel challenged.

People are hyped on doing exciting things like
flipping tires, running with sleds, training on
playgrounds equipment – it brings people back to
having FUN, which is critical.

This doesn't mean I don't use barbells and dumbbells.
I use them very often, but, prospects look at these
tools like some "secret weapon".

Although I know they are just tools, people who hear
about us, for some odd reason, these tools are spoken
of like some "special place".

It adds a unique aura to the business, that's
how people perceive it!

The other thing I explain is that this style of training
does NOT discriminate. Everyone should be training like
athletes. It's the best way to add muscle, burn fat and
hype the metabolism.

It's not just for athletes, it's for anyone who wants
to get fit.

I still use plenty of barbell and dumbbell training, BUT,
for someone who wants to run bootcamps, train outdoors,
or simply create a new style of "functional" training,
these tools are the way to go.

You can throw them in the back of your car or make them
for dirt cheap and have them in your little studio.

They won't break your bank and you can make them unique.
You can spray paint the stones different colors, same
with the kettlebells.

The parents who see all these tools view them as a
"secret weapon" that no one else is using.

The adults see this as an adult playground, or, they
think it's like training from the 300 Movie. It brings
them back to the days of "playing" and allows them to
escape the reality of a serious 9-5 grind day!

With great energy, you can create an amazing environment
for them to use. All of these movements are ground based,
so constantly picking up weights from the floor make the
body work much more intensely and efficiently compared
to the typical training in a gym.

Most of all, people want results and they want them fast!

In 2 weeks our clients are so far advanced from when
they started they are beyond impressed and even speechless
at how fast they have physically and mentally changed.

This "new" feeling sells the effectiveness of the program
asap. I don't have to promise results in 30 days or 60
days.

They feel stronger from 1 workout to the next. They
compare it to training at their local gym or with their
friends and they don't want to go back to the old,
boring ways of fitness they once experienced.

They want to become part of the "family and have FUN
exercising."

If I had a resource like this when I first started my
training business with all the powerful audio interviews,
the predesigned workouts and all the photos giving my
workout ideas I would have been kicking ass even faster.

No matter how good your marketing is, you MUST deliver
awesome results, period. This makes your bootcamp, gym,
etc a no brainer for people to choose. If you're the
best, it's GREAT to be on top.

Our results are so powerful that I have no worries
looking a prospective parent / client in the eye telling
them we're the best. They can go elsewhere, but
we're the best.

When our clients refer other to us. They say the same
thing. Nothing is more powerful than a referral from
your client telling a prospect, "You gotta go to The
Underground, they're the best."

Secrets of a (Formerly) Broke Trainer

I wanted to change things up a bit and share
an interview I did with one of our Mastermind
Members, Zach Even-Esh. I know you'll enjoy it.

Here is part one:

1. How have you been able to go from a $5 per
session trainer to a guy with a six figure
business and multiple streams of income?

ZE: This could end being a book all in itself.

But, I did a few specific things that most
people don't do, or simply won't do, and it
helped me finally become a 6 figure trainer.

A) Leverage: I leveraged everything I possibly
could.

All the workouts we did in my parents backyard
I took pictures of with a digital camera. The
workouts were also recorded. I was able to
leverage all the pics, stories and workouts
into my first e book which I was selling for
$19.95.

I remember being scared shitless when Jim Labadie
told me to charge $27 for it! I had sold 5 copies
in a day once, so I ALMOST made $100 in one day
and man was I on Cloud 9!

That little e book was the beginning of me "making
mo.ney in my sleep". My first sale came from someone
in the UK and I was stoked like crazy! I get a rush
every time I look back to those days!

B) MAJOR ACTION! I was very aggressive in going
after my target market and did a lot of stuff for
FR.EE. This allowed me to develop a powerful
relationship with a select few places that I
still work with today.

It put me in front my target market on a regular
basis which made it easier for me to grow my
business fast. I collected e mails and names at
each fr.ee seminar, I gave fr.ee handouts,
offered more fr.ee seminars and quickly pronounced
myself as the go to guy for training wrestlers
in NJ.

C) Investment in Education: I purchased a lot of
products to help me grow my training business
and online business. I ALWAYS took action with
them and put to use the information.

I found mentors and offered to pay them for phone
time or face time. Alwyn Cosgrove and Joe DeFranco
were my first mentors, and ironically, I was their
first students and today, both of these guys are a
few of my closest friends that goes way beyond
business.

I saw how Alwyn had the best gym in the world,
I knew if I invested X dol.lars with him I would
grow it into XXXXX. I saw Joe DeFranco trained
athletes in a small closet storage space. I had
a garage. I wanted to leverage what I had and
I invested X with Joe which gave me a return
of XXXXXX Dol.lars.

I always told myself that if I invested in a
product I had to earn it back 10 times in the
first month. That way I put some pressure on
myself to take a lot of action. I always took
a lot of action with those words in my mind.

Many people either don't invest in their education
and if they do, they do nothing with the new
information they have.

I took massive action. Work ethic was something
I didn't have to learn, I already had it!

2. You've built a great gym on a shoestring. How
have you done it?

ZE: This was not by choice. I was in debt when I
started, so purchasing expensive equipment was out
of the question.

When I started, "functional" training was the
BIG craze.

I remember looking at machines on the low end
for $10,000!!

I had no choice so I bought used equipment from
the classifieds from gyms that shut down and
went out of business. I made a few sandbags and
used stones.

I never knew it would work so well but man it
freaked everyone out, including myself! My Dad
welded a few sleds together for me. I would have
3 sleds in my trunk, 3 sandbags and I would go
to playgrounds, parks, backyards or the athletes
would meet at my house.

The results were awesome. I leveraged these
methods and filmed my first DVD, hiring a kid
from the local high school to shoot it for me.
It cost me maybe $200 at the time and I remember
selling 20 DVDs in 1 day!

That was a BIG goal of mine and I remember
telling everyone I was going to sell 20 DVDs in
one day at a seminar Jim and Ryan Lee hosted.
The name of the seminar was called 'Fitness
Prosperity' and it was from 8 PM – 4 AM!

I had a great time that night and we ate at
the local Diner afterwards. Stephen Holt, Todd
Scott, Dan Huff, Joe Stankowski, Scott Colby,
Jason C. Brown and many others were there.

It was the beginning of an awesome time in
my business and I was VERY proud to do what
I was doing!
