know that BJ's taken the time to answer a bunch of questions
about the big upcoming launch of Bootcamp Automator.

Check it out here:

What You Need, Aff

In my mind you need a few things to be successful as a fitness professional
in the long-term.

You might make a quick buck without some of these - but for lasting
success, you need them all:

1. A passion for fitness and helping people.
2. The ability to consistently deliver results.
3. A thirst for knowledge and a willingness to continually learn.
4. A systematic approach to business - not necessarily an operations
manual, but at least best practices that you use. No flying by the seat
of the pants.
5. Multiple streams of revenue. Never put all your eggs in one basket.

Anyone telling you that you can build lasting success with less that that
is lying or not smart enough for you to bother listening to.

Notice I didn't say a niche market, a group training based model or fancy
marketing?

They all help - often help a LOT. I talk about all of them regularly, but
they aren't the foundation.

These are.

I wrote up a blog post detailing Number 5 here:

http://fitbusinessinsider.com/do-you-have-at-least-5-of-these/

Enjoy the post and be sure to tell me what you think over at the blog.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - You have one more day to grab your Youth Nutrition Specialist
Certification and save $100. You even get 16 ready to use handouts -
that's worth the investment by itself ;)

Are You Doing Enough?

I'm not sure I can convey what I want in an email - this might
have been better suited for a blog post, but I'll give it a shot.

If you want to enact change in people you need to be willing to
go the extra mile.

I'd bet 99% of personal trainers don't do enough to enact real
change in people.

They deliver workouts - like a barber delivers a haircut.

If you want to bring about real change you have to do more.

You have to build relationships with clients.

You have to educate them.

You have to empower them for the 23 hours a day they're not
with you.

To help your clients change you have to be relentless.

Hit (not literally) them from all angles.

You've got to make sure they 'get it.'

After working at a University for the better part of a decade, I can
tell you that plenty of professors 'talk at' their students, not really
caring what the students learn.

Mostly happy to hear their own voices.

However the great ones - the ones that change students lives - are
the ones that focus on what the students learn.

You should be the same way.

The ability to get someone tired... anyone can do that.

Even the worst of trainers can wear people out.

Are you getting people better?

That's the question.

Before I wrap up - you may wonder what this has to do with business.

In a word: Everything.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - In case you wondered, that's why the IYCA created the new
Youth Nutrition Specialist Certification.

Young athletes won't reach their potential without that piece to the
puzzle, so as trainers and coaches we have to lead them.

You can learn more about the new IYCA Nutrition Credential here:

So you want to grow

Every day I get questions from fitness professionals asking about how
they can grow their business and not be the only one 'doing it all.'

If you're trying to expand and add another trainer - or several, here are
a few tips:

1. Develop your 'system.' No system means no ability to expand.

2. Create and quantify your culture. What's yours? For a good fitness
business, these components come to mind:

- High Energy
- Non-Intimidating Atmosphere
- Very Motivational
- Family-like Community
- Client or Service Driven - everything is about them

3. Hire to deliver your system and uphold your culture.

4. Train your staff until they're delivering it the way you want - then
keep training them to keep them sharp.

5. Identify expectations and set goals. If there are no standards, you
can't measure performance.

That's a start but if you want more about how to 'replicate yourself',
head over to the Workout Muse blog. BJ will be doing a webinar on
automating bootcamps next Tuesday and he's taking questions.

In fact, if you post a question you'll have a chance to win a year fr.e.e
of the new Bootcamp Automator program.

Click here and post your question

----> http://www.workoutmuse.com/ask-your-biggest-bootcamp-question

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - You may think you'll never want to hire another trainer... maybe,
but you still want to use systems to run your business. It will give you
more profits and fewer headaches. Not a bad combination ;)

So Much For Planning

I've always been a 'list maker.'

I've used the same Franklin planner since 1994 -
though I've now added Google Calendar to the mix too.

Needless to say - I love planning ahead.

But something I've come to learn over the past couple of
years is that things change so quickly that if you aren't
constantly learning and adapting - the best laid plan won't work.

Just a few years ago our big plan was to own a dozen health
clubs in our region.

Now, instead we have over a dozen businesses that serve
people all over the globe.

Plans we've made for each of our businesses have changed
frequently - sometimes on a quarterly basis - always adapting
to new things we've learned or sometimes new technologies
that allow us to have more impact.

For your business it's the same.

You've got to be willing to adapt.

If one means of generating leads isn't working, find another.

If your market isn't responding to what you're doing - change.

You've heard it many times before, but that doesn't make
it any less true:

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting
different results."

Determine what your mission is - then take action to achieve it.

Fail fast and move on.

Having a plan is a good start. Being willing to change the plan will
give you a better finish.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

Are You A *Real* Coach?

I'm sitting in a hotel here in Columbus. Ohio recovering after
a minor panic attack after fearing that my phone died.

It's ok and my heart rate is now back close to normal.

I'm here because tomorrow my High School Baseball Coach
gets inducted into the Ohio High School Hall of Fame.

It's been 20 years since I graduated high school
(yes, that hurtsto say.)

But I still thought it was important enough to be here.

When I got into coaching, I wanted to really impact people's lives.

I certainly didn't give a s&*t about SEO, PPC and all that other
crap you hear *marketers* talk about.

I wanted to make people better.

I'm here because one of my coaches made me better and I want to
say thanks.

And as a side note - last night, I got to visit with one of my former
players that was in Louisville.

Tonight I got to spend some more time with another former player
that is speaking at the clinic here.

They're both doing great and hopefully I got to play a tiny part in
their success.

Because that's what coaches do.

So do me a favor - don't ever call me an internet marketer - or a
marketer at all.

Honestly, those titles kinda make my skin crawl.

I always have been a coach and always plan to be. If I use the internet
or the phone or whatever comes down the line to help more people so
be it - but I've always thought of myself as a coach and today was just
one more reminder of that.

Hopefully you feel the same way, because the world needs more
marketers and internet marketers like it need more lawyers.

But it needs a bunch more successful coaches.

One Key Tip

I spend the weekend in Tampa at Joel Marion's
Transformation Domination event where Holly was
speaking.

It was a ton of fun getting to hang out with Jayson
Hunter, Scott Colby, Eric Cressey, Zach Even-Esh,
Craig Ballantyne, Rocco, Tom Terwilliger, Shawn Phillips
and a host of others.

For me it was mostly about visiting with friends and
being around to support Holly - but she gave a
great presentation Time & Energy Management and
I wanted to share the biggest lesson I got from it.

"Be In The Moment"

If you want to be a better trainer or coach - if you want
to grow your business - I can't give you any simpler or
more effective advice than that.

If you want to be better at networking - pour yourself into
the conversation you're in rather than scanning the room
looking for the next person to talk to.

If you want to be a better coach - give your undivided attention
to your clients or athletes when they're with you.

If you want to be a better business person - dedicate some time
each week to growing your business and spend that time doing
just that instead of checking email, surfing the internet and
doing a dozen other things that pull you away from your focus.

Commit yourself to giving your undivided attention and your best
effort to each task and you'll soon find that you won't need to do
a million different things to be successful.

You'll be doing a few things - but you'll do them incredibly well.

Give them to me!

If you want to run a successful business, you have to
know your numbers.

At minimum you need to know:

:: Your number of leads per month
:: Your 'show' rate - the% of leads that actually come in
:: Your closing %
:: Your average deal / program size

There are plenty of other numbers you *should* know:

:: Your avg lifetime client value
:: Your avg monthly client value
:: Your cost per lead and a few others..

But let's start with the first group.

If you know the numbers and are brave enough to be
accountable - send them over.

I'd love to see and give some feedback.

It’s a bunch of s&*t

What am I talking about?

The fallacy that you need to be an internet guru or
have some fancy image or brand to become a success.

We built a 30K per month training business before we
ever had a website.

Didn't need a single PPC or Craigslist ad to get over 400
clients.

You want clients - get off you're a&$ and go network,
do public speaking, form some JV's and get your hands
dirty.

Save the fancy pants website, PPC and Craigslist 'till after
you've done that.

You want to develop a brand or an image - start by doing
the work.

If you want to be an expert at serving a specific niche - actually
serve it -and serve it well.

Don't just tell someone you're the expert and build a house
of cards around it.

Am I saying that you don't need a website or you shouldn't
invest time into creating a brand for your business - heck no.

What I *am* saying is that thinking this is the magic solution
that will take you from 20K per yr to 200K is a pipe dream.

Lay the foundation by doing the work - all that stuff most
people are too lazy or impatient to do - then once you've
built the foundation, use these tools to take you to the next
level.

But as my dad used to say - don't get the cart in front of
the horse.

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - You want to talk about a guy that does the work - my
friend and biz partner BJ Gaddour.

He's built great camps & corporate camps, helped build the
BCBP and been the driving force behind the incredible growth
of Workout Muse.

He just masterminded (with his lovely wife Naomi) the biggest
bootcamp event ever - Workout Worldwide. Now he's got
some cool gifts for you:

Aff, How would you like to test drive a Lamborghini Diablo…

Hi Aff,

If you ever wanted to test drive a
Lamborghini Diablo, here's your chance
to ride something just as powerful.

You'd know what I'm talking about if
you've ever experienced the heart-pounding,
mind-blowing, neck-tingling power
of profiting from someone else doing
all the work for you.

It's too bad if you don't.

I have a team of professionals that
do all the market research, all
the product development, all
the website designs, all the
autoresponder messages and even
writes the sales letter for me....
EVERY... SINGLE... MONTH.

==> http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=CB443&m=1b1NlNrg.6ltGP&b=4kbmNFjKPN5m0CUQ3tfYBg

Do you have a team doing this for you?

Are you sitting back and relaxing
while someone else does all the work?

No? Okay, probably not. Guess what
though, I've saved you a spot:

==> http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=CB443&m=1b1NlNrg.6ltGP&b=4kbmNFjKPN5m0CUQ3tfYBg

You can give it a test drive for 30 days

I know it's not a REAL Lamborghini Diablo,
but you'll see that test driving this will
give you the thrill of your life. Don't
miss the opportunity of a life time. You wait
too long and this baby is gone!

Success is YOURS!

P.S. - Did I mention that you can get in risk
free for 30 days? What are you waiting for,
act fast because Craig warned me that he will
be taking down this trial period soon.

Do You Have The Recipe?

Yesterday I had lunch with Joe Kenn.  If you don't know Joe, among
other things he's won the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning
Professional of the Year - kinda like the Heisman for S&C coaches.

Well, our discussion touched everything from training to business
because Joe knows the recipe.

To achieve success, you gotta have the total package.

If you're in business for yourself - you must be a great trainer
or coach *and* you need to know business.

It can't be one or the other.

You need both.

Joe has spent most of his time becoming a great coach.

He's helped develop some of the best players in the NFL.

Now he's studying the business side of things.

He's talking to guys like me and Dave Tate.

He's researching what works online and offline.

Because he knows what it takes to be successful.

You need the total package

So do yourself a favor: take a long look in the mirror
and decide what area(s) that you feel like are holding
you back from reaching your goals.

Then send me an email and tell me what you're going
to do about it.

2010 - The year of accountability ;)

Dedicated to your success -

Pat

P.S. - If you're unsure of what to do - I'm happy to
offer suggestions based on what area(s) you feel like
need work. But you gotta ask ;)

Achieve all your goals in 2010

I just did a blog post detailing exactly which
