What I learned at the farm

We took Tyler to a local pumpkin patch Sunday.

Well, not just a pumpkin patch.

A place called Huber's Farm.

The Huber family is pretty smart.

Back in the 60's they placed an ad in the paper
and invited people to come pick their own beans
when they had too many beans for their family to
pick themselves.

They were floored when a bunch of 'city folks' came
out, excited to do the stuff they thought of as 'work.'

People would come, pick fruits and vegetables and
pay the family for what they took home.

The Hubers added a restaurant, a store and now have
everything from pumpkin patches and apple orchards to
a petting zoo and a winery.

We were there Sunday and there were easily 1500 people
at the farm.

All spending mo.ney.

They had a restaurant and two barns housing buffets…
…all full with at least a 30 minute wait.

They went through several hundred people an hour
purchasing pumpkins.

Oh – and this place is at least 35 minutes out back roads
into the country.

But I'm not telling you this to share how I spent my
Sunday.

I'm telling you because I got some unexpected lessons
from Huber's Farm.

1. Don't be afraid to go against the norm. Everyone
else picked their own crops…they decided to do the
opposite.

2. The easiest way to grow your business is to sell more to the
people already buying from you.

3. The second easiest way to grow your business is to go
one degree away from what you already do. For the
Hubers it was expanding to offering different fruits and
vegetables to pick – especially popular seasonal ones – and
other ways to use their assets - like their crops and land.

Do me a favor and think about how you can apply those
lessons to your business.

I'm thinking about how I can apply them to mine;)

Dedicated to your success -

Pat
